Frequently Asked Questions

  • The 3D spheroid system is functionally stable and suitable for chronic applications, thus allowing to assess long-term toxicity and induction not supported by conventional in vitro systems due to the rapid loss of hepatic phenotypes and functions.

The use of human cells instead of animal models allows direct translation of findings to patients.

The spheroid system is optimized to support co-cultures with non-parenchymal cells, such as Kupffer, biliary and Stellate cells, to more closely resemble the cellular repertoire of the liver, which allows studies of inflammatory processes reliant on hepatocyte - immune cell interactions and permits to capture complex DILI events.

As the 3D spheroids capture the phenotypic variability between individuals in vitro, employing cells from multiple donors simulates small “clinical trials”, thus considerably reducing costs and time for the customer.

Scalability of the system in 96-well format allows screening of dozens of conditions and/or drug candidates with multiple replicates in a single experiment.

Controlled experimental conditions, such as precisely defined spheroid sizes and chemically-defined, serum-free culture conditions ensure maximal reproducibility. Moreover this setting facilitates mechanistic insights, which can aid in targeted compound optimizations to circumvent toxicity.

  • As part of our business philosophy we offer extensive customer support from project initiation to closure. Before project launch, we discuss customer expectations and tailor the experimental designs and readouts to the particular needs.

We perform an integrative analysis in which the results are interpreted by certified experienced toxicologists.

The final report is delivered to the customer and contains the experimental results, their toxicological interpretation as well as consulting about future steps and recommendations for follow-up studies, thus facilitating rapid progress of the project in question.

  • As projects are highly individualized, the duration of the experimental phase depends on assay, endpoints of interest, number of donors etc. The time from finalization of experimental results to interpretation and delivery typically takes 1-2 weeks.
